A Guide to February's Birthstone - Amethyst

The birthstone for February is Amethyst. Star signs are Aquarius and Pisces.

Amethyst is one of the world's most popular gemstones, as it is one of very few gems with a natural purple colour. It has been used for personal jewellery for over 2000 years. The word Amethyst comes from the ancient Greeks, who used to carve it into drinking vessels as they believed it protected you from drunkenness.

Colour

Amethyst is a dreamy purple through to lavender in colour. Chevron Amethyst is also purple but with bands of White Quarts in a “V” pattern throughout that give it its name. Normally a transparent crystal growing into points, either in a geode, a cluster or on its own.

Source

Amethyst can be mined in many places in the world, but most of the best quality comes out of South America, specifically Uruguay.

Attributes

Amethyst has the most beautiful calming and soothing energy. It helps you to relax and destress, especially if you add a piece to your bath water at the end of a busy day. It can help reduce fear, rage, sadness and anxiety, replacing these feelings with tranquillity and calm.

Healing

When used in crystal healing, it helps to release tension and relieve physical, emotional and psychological pain. It is great for promoting a good night’s sleep by placing some under your pillow. If you place some in your bedroom, having the point of the crystal towards you will draw in energy or away from you to draw it off. Remember that it will fade in sunlight, so avoid windowsills. It can be very beneficial when worn as jewellery, as you carry its relaxing nature around with you.

It is also a brilliant choice as a crystal massage roller, as it helps rejuvenate the skin, improve lymphatic flow and reduce puffiness. If placed correctly, it will help reduce swelling and bruises too!

Chakra

As a crystal that is purple and white, it resonates with the Crown chakra that is found on the very top of your head. It will help to soothe your mind and aid with meditation. Chevron Amethyst works wonders with your Third Eye chakra between your eyebrows. It cleanses the aura and enhances your intuition.

Amethyst is one of my all-time favourite crystals and makes beautiful jewellery, not only for how it looks but the energy it brings.

If you know someone with a birthday in February, then a gift of Amethyst would always be well received.
