A Guide to January Birthstone - Garnet

The birthstone for January is Garnet. Capricorn, Aquarius.

The word Garnet, has its origins in the Latin word for “seed” as it was thought that this little red gem resembled Pomegranate seeds!

Colour

If you are lucky to have Garnet as your birthstone, you’ll find that they can come in all colours ranging from fiery reds, pinks, oranges, yellows, browns and black. The most commonly used colour for jewellery (since 3000 BC) is a deep red. It was thought that the stone contained lightning due to the brilliant flash it gives off in sunlight.
There are even colour changing types of garnet. It will appear one colour in sunlight and another when incandescent light is on it. How magical!
