What is Rhodium plating?
Rhodium plating is when we coat a thin layer of Rhodium over your existing Gold or Silver jewellery.
What does Rhodium plating do?
It adds a thin layer of Rhodium to your jewellery, adding shine and durability. As Rhodium is a harder alloy than Gold or Silver, it won’t scratch, dent, or tarnish as easily.
How long does Rhodium plating last?
It can last from 1-5 years depend on how your jewellery is cared for. Rings will wear quicker than earrings or necklaces because they get more wear.
Can I wear Rhodium plated jewellery in the shower?
Yes, you can, but be aware that exposure to lots of soap and chemicals will eventually erode the plating.
Why do you need to solder jewellery?
You would need to solder jewellery if a part of it has broken off. For example, if the post has come away from that back of an earring, this would need to be soldered back on.
What’s the difference between welding and soldering jewellery?
When soldering, the metal is heated so that it can be bonded together without softening. Welding would melt the metal and your jewellery.
What is the shank of a ring?
The shank is the round band at the bottom of the ring that sits around your finger.
How do I know if I need a new shank?
The shank can wear down over time, becoming thin and eventually breaking. If you notice your ring is looking rather thin at the bottom, bring it in, and we can add more metal. If it has broken completely, we can replace it for you.
Can a ring shank be thickened?
We would replace the part that is too thin instead of thickening the existing shank. The end result would be a thicker shank made from new metal that matches the existing metal on your ring.
What is a claw?
The claw is the part of your jewellery that holds your gemstone in place. (When the gemstone is in a claw setting)
How can I tell if I have a claw setting?
When looking at your jewellery, you will see little fingers holding onto the gemstone. These are the claws.
What is claw re-tipping?
If any of your claws have worn or been damaged, we will rebuild them, making sure that your gemstone will not become loose and fall out.
What happens if I don’t get my claws re-tipped?
If your claws get badly worn or damaged, your gemstones can become loose and fall out.
What is pearl threading?
Pearl threading or stringing is the delicate art of placing and knotting pearls back onto a necklace or bracelet. It is done by hand by an experienced expert.
When should I get my pearls re-threaded?
Over time, the silk thread can become stretched, becoming slack and creating some distance between each pearl. If this starts to happen, it may be time to get them re-threaded.
How are pearls re-threaded?
It is a highly skilled job that involves hand knotting each pearl, normally on silk thread, although other materials can be used. The knot between each pearl stops them rubbing against each other, causing damage. It also stops all the pearls from rolling away if the thread was to break.
What is jewellery remodelling?
This is where we take your existing jewellery, which may no longer be to your taste, and transform it into a new bespoke design.
Can you remodel a ring?
We can remodel most jewellery. We can remove the gemstones from the old ring and use the metal to create a new design. It does not have to be another ring; it can be anything you like. If the new item requires more Gold or Silver to create, we will factor this into the cost of the bespoke piece.
How do you engrave jewellery?
