The most vibrant of all the green gemstones, Emeralds are associated with the new beginnings of spring. Perfect for a May birthstone! The name “Emerald” comes from the Greek word for green.

Colour

Emeralds range from Blue-green, to rich green, to yellow-green. The colour of the gemstone can depend on where in the world it was mined. The warmer green colours are normally found in Columbia, while paler greens were found in Russia.

In ancient times the most famous Emeralds were mined in Egypt, Cleopatra even had her own Emerald mine! They can now be mined all over the world but most of the jewellery quality Emeralds today come from Columbia, Brazil and Zambia.

Emeralds are the gemstones of the heart, they enhance loyalty, partnership and friendship. They also help with wisdom, patience and inspiration. Once thought to protect the wearer from enchantments and misfortune.

The inclusions within the Emerald are called “Jardins” (French for gardens) as they look like mossy patches of green gardens running through the gemstone.
