The Importance of the Correct Ring Size.

We all have our daily ‘go to’ rings, whether engagement and wedding rings or just your good old favourite. But do you know the importance of the correct ring size?

As we travel through life, our fingers can change, becoming larger due to pregnancy, illness, weight change or even the weather. This may cause your rings to become too tight. Who cares, right? We do, and I’ll explain why……

Wearing a ring that is too small

can actually cause you injury.

The constant wearing of a tight ring can restrict blood flow to the finger, leading to swelling, pain and discomfort. In severe cases, this can even lead to permanent damage to your finger’s skin, nerves and muscles. The more a finger swells, the tighter your ring will become, the more damage it will do to your hand and the harder it will be to remove.

It Can Damage Your Ring

Not only will your finger not thank you for having a ring that’s too tight, neither will the ring. If you keep wearing a ring that’s too small, it can cause the metal to warp or break, making it difficult to repair. Even worse is the prospect of having to have it cut off! (The ring, not your finger). This can be tricky to do and heart breaking to watch if it’s your beloved engagement ring or a family heirloom.

How Can I Tell If My Ring Is Too Small?

A good-fitting ring should go over your knuckle without too much friction and fit snugly, but not tightly, around your finger. When taking the ring off, you should be able to do this with a small amount of effort but no pain or tingling of any kind. It is too small if taking your ring off and on makes your finger or knuckles red and sore.

What Should I Do If My Ring Is Too Tight?

If you think your ring may be too tight, or if you KNOW it’s too tight and has been sitting sadly in a drawer for ages, there is hope! We can adjust the size of most rings and will happily give you a free finger sizing. Come and see us in store and we shall measure your finger and advise of the best size for you. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t purchase the ring from us; we should still be able to size it up for you, avoiding any possible future injury or damage to your ring!

My ring is too big, is this a problem?

If your ring is too loose on your finger, it could also cause a problem. A loose ring is a ring that is easily caught on the things around you. I once caught one on a door handle, it really hurt, and it bent my ring out of shape. I was lucky though, as no real damage was done to my finger. In some cases, a ring that is rapidly removed by being yanked off can do some severe damage to your finger. It can damage the nerves, muscle tissue and tendons leading to irreparable damage and a trip to A&E.

How can I tell if my ring is too big, and what can I do about it?

If your ring spins around your finger or comes off when you wash your hands or shake your hand around, it is too big. Come and see us and we shall measure your finger for the correct size and advise on how we can size it down for you. Thus, possibly saving your finger from an ugly accident and your ring from going down the drain!
